Teen apologizes to neighbors after chemistry lab raid

S OUTH HADLEY - A South Hadley teenager is apologizing to neighbors after state and federal authorities dismantled his home chemistry lab, disrupting his neighborhood for three days last month. Jack Robinson, a 17-year-old chemistry student at Holyoke College, said in an on-camera statement to Springfield's WWLP-TV that he's "deeply sorry" for the actions of the authorities, which he blames on "a series of miscommunications."

BOG-College examines chemistry funding

Members of the Saint Mary's Board of Governance (BOG) considered a co-sponsorship request from the chemistry department at their meeting Tuesday night. Student Body President Kim Hodges said the trip could be cancelled if there is not enough student interest. Mary's will be welcoming singer Chad Perrone to campus March 26 at 8 p.m. in Dalloways, Cassie Callon, President of Student Activities Board, said.

Scientists have new hopes of restoring penicillin's full antibiotic effect after discovering how a bacterium which causes pneumonia has become resistant. The Warwick team, whose study appears in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, were able to replicate the activity of MurM in a test tube, allowing them to study in close detail exactly how it is deployed by Streptococcus pneumoniae to neutralise penicillin.
