Asthma risk in children linked to household chemicals

Women who use a lot of household cleaning products when they are pregnant or shortly after the birth of their baby, may be increasing the risk of their child developing asthma, suggests research from the Children of the 90s study. Researchers also carried out skin prick tests on around 7,000 of the children at age 7 which to test for allergies and found that exposure to chemicals had a stronger effect on those children with asthma but without allergies.

Illnesses reported after chemicals dumped

KIPEVU, Kenya, March 13 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people near the port city of Mombasa, Kenya, reported becoming ill after leaking chemical containers were dumped nearby, officials said. People said the drums were abandoned at Kipevu, near Mombasa, more than a month ago by a truck driver who discovered a yellow substance leaking from the drums, the BBC reported Thursday.

Calder High 'explosive' chemicals are found

A police spokeswoman confirmed: "We have been informed by the school that the chemical has been found. "We decided the most responsible thing to do was to make people aware that the chemical is missing from school." He said the chemical is used to demonstrate small explosives to students around a dozen times a year and most secondary schools stock it. Researcher gets grant to detect chemicals

A Virginia Tech researcher has been given a $400,000 federal grant to develop a credit card-size device that could detect chemicals in the atmosphere or water in seconds. Agah, an assistant professor in Tech's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was awarded the $400,000 grant, to be given out over five years, by the National Science Foundation. Current "gas chromatography" devices tend to be large, table-top instruments that resemble a furnace, Agah said.
