Offshore aquaculture organisation announces new board

THE new offshore aquaculture trade organisation for the Americas, the Ocean Stewards Institute has announced that its first board of directors has been elected by membership to guide the organisation through the next "critical" year. The Ocean Stewards Institute maintains that environmentally sound open ocean aquaculture offers a potential solution to the critical need for increasing the consistency and quality of seafood supplies, without increasing pressure on ocean fisheries.

Carole R. Engle receives major aquaculture award

McCraren Award for outstanding contributions in promoting the growth of aquaculture. The award was given to Engle for her efforts supporting a scientifically based approach to the regulation of Asian carps, and her support of fair global trade practices. In addition to being the only two-time McCraren award winner, Engle has received other industry awards including the prestigious Catfish Farmers of America Researcher of the Year award in 2003. Wild type of common carp in Japan is threatened

Scientists from Japan have discovered that the gene pool of native strain of the wild carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) in Japan is extirpated due to large-scale introductions of conspecific domesticated strains from Eurasia. However, evidence of hybridisation between native and introduced strains of common carp has been reported for German and Uzbekistan populations and thus, it is reasonable to assume that the native and non-native domesticated strains also have hybridised in Japan.

Aquaculture, A Good Catch for Hoosier Producers

As part of their aquaculture initiative, the Indiana Soybean Alliance sponsored the first ever Financing Aquaculture Conference in Indiana on Friday. In addition, the sport, bait, and ornamental fish markets are proving to be lucrative for some Indiana fish farmers. Ken Perkins with First farmers Bank and Trust, said there is no way Hoosier fish farmers can compete with cheap frozen imports from China and Southeast Asia.
