Auditors admonish Benton City over closed meetings, sloppy accounting

A state audit of Benton City found repeated violations of open public meetings laws and sloppy accounting processes that may have shorted the city at least $117,000. An investigation also found that a lien filed by the city on a resident's home grew over two years from $30,770 to $102,594, yet updated paperwork never was filed with Benton County and ultimately the home was sold with the city settling for $4,500.
