State still tackling scope of beef disposal

SACRAMENTO - California health officials are trying to track down hundreds of beef distributors that did business with the Westland/Hallmark slaughterhouse in Chino, witnesses told a Senate panel Monday during a hearing on the state's handling of the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Jeff Farrar, chief of the state Department of Public Health's food and drug branch, said there were 150 companies that bought beef directly from the company in the past two years. 143 million pounds of beef -- was recalled Feb. 17 after an undercover Humane Society worker filmed slaughterhouse workers prodding fallen cows to slaughter by spraying water, shoving and pulling them. Districts have received conflicting information about how to discard the beef, some school officials said Monday. Monday, the San Bernardino City Unified School District finished trucking about 98,000 pounds of beef to the landfill.
