Apathy in arts reflected in general

After growing steadily for 50 years, visits to national parks in the U.S. started to decline about 20 years ago. On the basis of statistics on the issuance of hunting and fishing licenses, it appears that participation in the sport of fishing peaked around 1981, and then began to decline, dropping by a full 25 per cent by 2005. According to the National Golf Foundation and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, the number of people who play golf 25 times a year or more dropped by about a third between 2000 and 2005. But when you hear about golf course operators trying to offset decline with special marketing packages aimed at women and families or trying to recruit young people through high school outreach programs, you begin to wonder what's really happening here. If these trends were inevitable, the product of vast economic forces or some kind of natural rise and decline of civilizations, the best we could do is prepare to make the necessary adjustments.
