$8.5 million OKd for North Meck rail

Engineering for a commuter rail line to the Lake Norman area could begin next month after Charlotte City Council unanimously approved a contract worth up to $8.5 million Monday night. Some council members said it was important to support the commuter rail line to create a countywide transit system, and, in part, because north Mecklenburg supported the half-cent transit sales tax last November. Unlike the Lynx Blue Line along South Boulevard, the proposed commuter rail line won't qualify for federal funding, in part because it doesn't have enough riders to meet federal requirements for funding. Though it has taken years of meetings and planning to get the commuter rail line this far, construction is expected to be relatively easy -- especially when compared with the South Boulevard light-rail line and its extension to University City.
