DM to host Olympic trials for tae kwon do

Des Moines' road to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing will include reigning world-champion gymnast Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines and two qualifiers from this summer's Hy-Vee Triathlon. Officials announced last year that Des Moines had been picked to hold the 2008 Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships, the national qualifying event in which competitors age 14 to 17 vie for the right to compete in July in Detroit. The tae kwon do governing board decided to use the junior event in Des Moines for two other major qualifiers with the Olympic trials, the final phase to fill the four-member team and wrap up a process that started with 50 athletes competing for almost a year.
